Rural Women New Zealand celebrates Centennial Jubilee
To mark the conclusion of Rural Women New Zealand’s centenary year, Her Excellency The Rt Hon, Dame Cindy Kiro, GNZM, QSO Governor-General of New Zealand, hosted a morning tea at Government House on Friday.
Members from around the country, and invited guests gathered at Government House for the morning.
Her Excellency is the official patron of Rural Women New Zealand, and the office has a long-standing relationship with Rural Women New Zealand. Since 1927 the Governor-General or Governor-General’s spouse has been patron.
Rural Women New Zealand National President Heather Sorensen says it was a morning to remember.
“We were honoured to be hosted by the Governor-General, Dame Cindy Kiro, at Government House in Wellington, with members travelling from across the country to be there.
“Rural Women New Zealand is filled with remarkable women, many whose contributions to their communities and crafts have been recognised with New Zealand Royal Honours, so for them to return to Government House was extra special,” she says.
Over the past year celebrations have also been held across the country.
“We have celebrated our Centennial year in ways unique and meaningful to each region, member and branch, from a grassroots level to nationwide events.
“From a Centennial rose, gin, tea towels, scholarships, high teas, balls and more, we have not done things by halves this year. It has been a wonderful chance to honour the dedication and service of women before us who paved the way.
“On Thursday night we celebrated remarkable rural businesswomen at the NZI Rural Women Business Awards and Friday was about honouring the women of the past and strengthening our connection with current and future members. For 100 years Rural Women New Zealand has made a massive contribution to New Zealand, and we’re not done yet,” says Sorensen.
