Drummond School Safety Day

Drummond Branch ran a safety day at the school.

Because there are 91 children at the school we couldn't ask the Kindergarten to join us this year.

The sponsors for the day were Cancer Society, Harbour Master, Local Rural Fire Brigade, Emergency Management with earthquake machine, Police, Transport truck and Mitre 10 Winton. All of these sponsors gave their time and taught the children how to be safe.

Mitre 10 did chainsaws, weed eaters and lawn mowers plus they did poisons and sprays.

Police had tasers, pepper spray and safety on roads. Honda had a Two wheeler and Four wheeler to explain the safety gear they should wear and how to ride one.

The children could feel what it was like to be in an earthquake.

The cancer people explained what it looked like to have melanoma when you could have used sunscreen.

The truck driver explained how long it takes for the truck to stop with a trailer or without one.

The Harbour Master showed life jackets and how to be careful on the boat.

The Local Rural Fire Brigade had three local volunteers explain how a fire could get out of hand and be careful inside and out when starting a fire.

After they had finished the rounds a special treat finished the day. We were able to get a dog and his handler to show what a police dog does is a great way to finish the day. This was all done voluntarily with the school supplying the morning tea and lunch business giving up time to help children be safe. This is done every two years now and have been doing for good while now.

Rural Women ran the day by organising the sponsors at no cost.

This is what two young lads from school said:

“First we went to the big truck. The guy told us about the truck. I had a question ‘what is this trailer?’. The guy told me about it and I went in the cab and Miss Thorn took a photo in the cab. We said thank you then walked to the four wheeler. We learned how to keep safe on the four wheeler.”

- J J aged 8

“First we went to the fire truck and we got to climb in the firetruck and we got to put the siren on. Next we went to the boat and he talked about boat safety. We put on life jackets and when you pull the string it inflates and there was this metal thing and that helps to inflate the life jacket.”
